New Idea for Work – Keep Your Job Off Social Media

It is wonderful to keep your job by remembering to keep use social media like a responsible adult.

It seems that almost every day there are new laws being passed all over the country concerning the activities of workers on social media both inside and outside the workplace. I am located in Pennsylvania where you can be fired for good reason, bad reason or no reason at all if you have no employment contract and you are not being fired for a reason that is against public policy. For the most part, if you do not have an employment contract, as long as you are not fired for age, race, color, sex or sexual orientation you have no right to sue. I have seen people fired for liking the wrong football team or for making the boss sick.

This leads to back to social media. It is important to be careful what you do on social media because once it hits the internet it is very hard to take it back or explain away how other people interpret what you write.
It should be abundantly clear that it is not appropriate to use the internet and social media during work hours to disparage the company which employs you. However, every day there are people who sit at work, on work computers and spend hours on Facebook writing bad things about things about their bosses and co-workers. Just as bad are the people who go home and share photos and status updates about how horrid everyone they work with is to be around. Anyone who uses social media has seen those updates where a person spills all the work gossip all over the internet. While we will read those updates and laugh, none of us wants a person like that working at our organization.

What you say on social media about your employer will effect your time at work. An employer is not going to trust an employee who spreads bad news about the company on social media. Keep in mind that even if your employer does not fire you for your social media actions may impact decision on giving you promotions, raises and other opportunities. Additionally, it is not only your current employer who will make judgments about your social media behavior. Co-workers, friends and potential future employers will make judgments about what you share on social media. The things you share and the way you share them give an impression of you without you having said a word.

Like it or not, bad mouthing your employer, supervisors and co-workers on social media will effect your work life. You can cause damage in your professional life by being careless with social media. So, the question for you this wonderful day is, are you using social media like a responsible adult?

Entertain with Technology

It is terrific to find ways to use existing technology for entertainment.

Like many people who read this blog, I am a technology nut. I have the cell phone, the Kindle tablet, the Kindle reader, the laptop and a bunch of other gadgets. I really like  my gadgets and do not plan to give them up. What I enjoy more than just having gadgets is getting the most entertainment I can out of them.

Take my notebook computer for example. I use it to write my blog, run my business and to look for more business. When I purchased my computer I made sure it had a few features that I would be able to use for fun, including the following:
  • camera (web camera with video capability)
  • microphone
  • good speakers
  • big screen
  • lots of memory
  • built-in games
This means I can use my computer for making silly videos with my kids and taking photos. The microphone makes it easy to record whatever it is I want to say, sing or record for posterity. The microphone also makes it easy to use Skype, Google+  Hangout and other social media avenues. Netflix is such an inexpensive entertainment source and the big screen makes it easy for me to enjoy movies while working or relaxing. Another feature I like is the chess game that came with the computer so I can practice my game. I am hoping to be able to beat my ten-year old son one day. There is no substitute for a lot of computer memory except for maybe more computer memory.

My Kindle 3G  is one of the older ones that has unlimited 3G internet access for life. While the screen is black and white only, it is nice to have access to the internet so that I can check Facebook, Twitter and other social media when I take a break from reading. I also enjoy having music play while I read. I have several games installed on my e-reader including Scrabble and chess. Did I mention I want to beat my ten-year old son at chess?  My Kindle Fire tablet is set up to work as a mini laptop that I use for work. However I have games, movies, videos, music and all kinds of things to provide entertainment for me and a few things to entertain the kids in an emergency.

Almost everyone uses the cell phone for more than just telephone calls. Most are internet ready, play music, hold ebooks, videos and photographs. How many people have ignored telephone calls because of an exciting word game with friends?

Use your technology to make the things you need to do for work and home easier and smoother. But please do not forget to add some entertaining features  to make your technology more entertaining. So the question for you this terrific day is what is your favorite way of using technology to entertain?

Time to Start or Restart A Business

There are millions of people all over the United States who want to start or re-start businesses of their own. It reminds me of a riddle I read on Facebook once:

Fact:   There were five birds sitting on a telephone wire. Three planned to go to Florida for the winter.
Question: How many birds were left?
Answer:   Five because planning to do something is not the same as actually doing something.

If you have been planning to start or re-start a business, this is the perfect time to go from planning and get to actually doing it. In order to start or re-start your business make a plan, create a business plan. Your plan doesn’t have to be a long complicated document, but you should at the very least look at each of the following areas and put together a few sentences on each:
  • description and executive summary aka what will your business do and what are your qualifications for running the business
  • personnel aka who will be the staff, workforce, who will do the work at the business
  • marketing aka how will your business attract customers and make a name for itself
  • current finances aka what is your business’ current financial condition
  • financial projections aka what your business’ finances will look like over the next 1 to 5 years
When you take the leap from planning to start or re-start a business, you can do it in a variety of ways including:
  • quit your current job and go full force with the new business
  • continue to work at your current job and work at your own venture part-time
  • work your current job and work your business full-time as well (work two jobs)
The method you end up following will be based on a variety of factors including:
  • current financial condition
  • amount of savings
  • type of job you are currently working
  • nature of the business you wish to start or re-start
  • obligations to family and stakeholders in your life
Everyone is familiar with the saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail,” is especially crucial when you are starting or re-starting a business.  Once you make the plan, the next step, the crucial step is to start carrying out the plan. In the Bible, we are advised that faith without work is dead. Similarly a plan without action is dead. If you have been planning to start or re-start a business,  get up and start, move toward your goal. Take some action. If you have been planning to start a business for quite some time, start moving. It’s like eating an elephant, one bite at a time, you can get it done, it is easy to do, easy to manage.

So, if you start taking action and just move one step per day toward your goal you will get there. In addition, the momentum of moving toward your goal, of starting or re-starting your business will keep you moving toward the goal. So, the question for you this magnificent day is, what business have you been dreaming about starting or re-starting?

New Look at Old Classic – Frederick Douglass- My Bondage and My Freedom

It is sensational to improve your vocabulary by taking a new look at an old classic.

I enjoy reading and do so whenever I have a free moment, which is why my e-reader is such a good friend. It is my current practice to read one new book and one piece of classic literature. As a result, I am reading an old classic almost every other week.

There are thousands upon thousands of classic books that school students all over America are assigned to read each year. For the most part, a book becomes a classic because it teaches a valuable lesson, is beautifully written or is by an established author. In reading classic literature, I have learned many things and I know some of them were not what the author intended.  For example when I read Aesop’s Fables I learned that my son is quite the philosopher. When I read The Communist Manifesto I learned the best pick-up line of all time. When I read Moby Dick I learned more about whaling than I thought was humanly possible. When I read Frederick Douglass’ My Bondage and My Freedom  I learned that lack of education does not prevent one from having an incredible vocabulary.

I first read My Bondage and My Freedom when I was a fourth grade student who loved to read and read everything I  could lay my hands on. Years later as a forty plus year old woman I read it again and was impressed with the vocabulary. For those of you who do not know, Frederick Douglass was an American slave who obtained his freedom and became a major abolitionist who took on the cause of freeing all African-Americans from the horrors of slavery.

What made Douglass’ vocabulary especially impressive to me was the fact that he was self-educated. He expected a great deal from himself in terms of both his written and oral communication. I have always loved words, synonyms, antonyms, homophones and the like. I have always been week in the knees for a man with a big . . . vocabulary. In my mind, there is something truly incredible about the ability to have numerous words on hand to describe any situation, perfectly and accurately. I enjoyed My Bondage and My Freedom because the vocabulary was beautiful, varied and multi-syllabic. While reading it I used the dictionary feature on my e-reader many times and was excited to be able to do so.

Balancing Home and Work By Sharing Stories

Many people go to work each day, perform their duties and then come home to their families and never talk about work. Similarly, many people go to work each day and share nothing of their personal lives with their co-workers. On the surface, this may seem like a good way of doing things, keeping work and home in separate categories. However, things are not always what they seem. By keeping work and home in separate categories that never intermingle a person keeps her life out of balance. There are a wide variety of ways to keep work and home in balance including:
Another way to strike a balance between work and home is to share happy stories from work when you are at home.

When you work outside the home, there are two parts to your existence, the work you and the home you. It is an extremely hard and in most cases unnecessary task to keep the two separated.People go to work for many reasons including:
  • for personal fulfillment and growth
  • to earn money to provide for family
  • in order to carry out a mission
  • to meet professional responsibilities
  • to earn money to carry out one’s true purpose in life

Whatever the reason for one going to work, it is a significant part of one’s life in chief part because of the large amount of time spent at work. It is only natural for family members, children in particular to be curious about what a person does at work. All too often, family members only hear stories about work when there is a problem or something goes wrong. This gives a false and perhaps one-sided or imbalanced view of the workplace. It is a better practice to share good stories from work with the family. This way of doing things will make children feel there is something good to be gained from going to work. It may also encourage children to want to seek work and independence when they reach maturity.

With all things balance is important. As a result, when you share happy stories about work with your family, it keeps them from resenting the place that keeps you away from them for so many hours each day. Additionally, it is good to model a happy workplace for your children. It may also help you to feel better about yourself and your work if you find a happy thing to share with your family members each day. In your life, look to achieve balance between work and home by sharing happy work stories with your family. So, the question for you this fantastic day is do you share happy work stories with your family?
